Sweeps all four gold medals to top the standings on Day 2

Uzbekistan delivered a stunning performance at the 3rd Asian Youth Games (AYG), dominating the kurash competition by capturing all four gold medals on offer. The victories placed them firmly at the top of the medal standings at the end of the second day of action on Monday.
Golden Run Continues for Uzbekistan
On the second day of competition, Shohjahan Golibov and Mubinabonu Karimova added to their country’s golden haul, each securing a top podium finish.
- Golibov defeated Mehrab Mokarrami of Iran in the Boys’ -83kg final, showcasing skill and precision.
- Karimova followed with a decisive win over Kanishka Bidhuri of India in the Girls’ -52kg final.
These victories came right after Durdona Tursunova and Otabek Yuldashboev had earned gold medals on the opening day (Sunday), sealing a perfect sweep for the Central Asian powerhouse.
Kurash Debuts at the Asian Youth Games
This year marked the debut of kurash, a traditional martial art with roots in Uzbekistan, at the Asian Youth Games. Athletes from 14 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) took part in the event, but the Uzbeks’ mastery of the sport proved unmatchable.
It was fitting that the nation credited as the birthplace of kurash would dominate its inaugural appearance, winning every gold medal available.
Expanding Dominance Beyond Kurash
Uzbekistan’s success extended beyond kurash. The country also clinched another gold medal in pencak silat, another martial art making its debut at the Games.
Nurislom Ruziboev triumphed over Temir Bikboev of Kyrgyzstan in the Boys’ 59kg–63kg class, adding a fifth gold to Uzbekistan’s impressive tally.
Philippines Celebrates Its First Gold
Meanwhile, the Philippines earned its first gold medal in pencak silat through Airam Carpio, who won the Girls’ 51kg–55kg final, marking a proud moment for the nation.
Martial Arts Take Center Stage Before Opening Ceremony
Both kurash and pencak silat competitions concluded ahead of the official opening ceremony of the 3rd Asian Youth Games, scheduled for Wednesday, October 22.
Their inclusion has brought exciting new energy to the Games, highlighting Asia’s diverse martial arts heritage while giving rising athletes a platform to shine.
